Marietta Power & Water Tap & Sewer Development Fees (2026)

Last reviewed: By Utility Cost Guide editor

Inside Marietta city limits, the City of Marietta Power & Water department provides water, sewer and electric service — not Georgia Power, and not the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA), which only sells treated water wholesale to other utilities and does not bill homeowners directly (CCMWA). For a new single-family home with a standard 3/4-inch meter tapped by the city, the official one-time charges come to about $7,525: $1,500 to tap the main and install the meter, a $3,500 Sewer Development Fee, a $2,500 sewer tap installation and a $25 new-account charge (Water Meter & Wastewater Tap Fees). If the lot is in a platted subdivision where the developer already ran the service line to the property, the water charge drops to a $500 meter “drop,” bringing the total to $6,525. A $275 refundable deposit is also due when you open the account. The biggest caveat: the tap-fee schedule is dated “Effective January 1, 2022,” and the city’s page does not explain when the lower subdivision price applies versus the higher tap price, so confirm the exact charge with Marietta Power & Water before you budget. For how this compares nationally, see our guide to the cost to connect to city water.

Marietta connection fees at a glance

All of Marietta’s connection charges are published on one page maintained by Power & Water. The table below covers three kinds of charge. Water meter/tap fees are priced by meter size and come in two tiers: a lower “Drop” price for a lot in a new subdivision where the service line is already stubbed, and a higher “With Tap” price that includes the city tapping the main. Sewer fees are flat, not sized by meter: a Sewer Development Fee and a 6-inch tap installation charge. Account charges are the $25 new-service charge and the security deposit, which varies by whether you take power only, water only, or both (the typical case for a house inside city limits). Every row here is marked needs-review because the schedule is dated 2022 and no newer version was found; get a written quote from Power & Water before you rely on these numbers.

What a new Marietta house pays: worked example

Assumptions: one detached house inside Marietta city limits, a 3/4-inch domestic meter, and no separate irrigation meter. The city’s fee page lists two prices for this meter size with no stated rule for which applies, so this page shows both.

City of Marietta one-time charges for one house, 3/4-inch meter (source: Water Meter & Wastewater Tap Fees, effective Jan 1, 2022, confirm with utility).

Charge A. City taps the main (standard) B. New subdivision, service stubbed
Water meter/tap fee $1,500 $500
Sewer Development Fee (SDF) $3,500 $3,500
6-inch sewer tap installation $2,500 $2,500
New account/service charge $25 $25
Total official charges $7,525 $6,525
Refundable deposit (power & water) $275 $275

The arithmetic: scenario A is $1,500 + $3,500 + $2,500 + $25 = $7,525. Scenario B swaps in the $500 subdivision “drop” price for the meter, giving $6,525. In both scenarios the sewer charges are the same $6,000 combined, because they are flat per-connection fees, not sized by meter. A 1-inch meter changes only the water line: $1,800 with a tap (case A becomes $7,825) or $600 as a subdivision drop (case B becomes $6,625). The commercial version of the Sewer Development Fee is calculated case-by-case by the utility, so it has no published flat number; the $3,500 figure above is the residential rate only.

The deposit can be lower or waived: Power & Water says a residential deposit can be avoided if you’ve had Marietta Power service in the past year with 12 months of good standing, or reduced with a favorable credit check. If your address only takes one service from the city — power only or water only, which happens in a few areas — the deposit is $200 or $75 instead of $275, and you would not pay both sets of tap fees above.

Costs outside the Marietta fee schedule

The city’s page does not say whether the $2,500 sewer tap installation charge covers the physical connection at the main or just the permit to tie in, and it does not mention who builds the water and sewer lines on your side of the meter. Treat the following as separate, unpublished costs until Power & Water confirms otherwise for your lot:

The ranges come from our national benchmark set, not from Marietta sources. See our guides to water service line cost, sewer lateral cost and tap fees vs. impact fees. Add the private work to the Marietta fees with the calculator:

Services and site work

Many codes require horizontal separation between water and sewer. This estimate assumes separate water and sewer trenches unless you select a shared run where your utility allows it.

Paying Marietta fees: timing and process

Residential customers apply through the online service application; commercial customers and apartment complexes call Customer Service at 770-794-5150. A credit-based security deposit may be required, and the $25 new-account charge is billed on your first utility bill rather than collected up front. For construction that needs a subdivision main extension, the schedule adds a $25-per-page development plan review fee, an $8,500 standard fire hydrant installation where one is required, and per-linear-foot inspection fees for new water main ($1.20/ft) and sewer line ($2.25/ft) construction, each with a $250 minimum — none of these apply to an ordinary infill lot on a street that already has water, sewer and hydrant coverage. Builders who need temporary water before the permanent meter is set can rent a construction (fire hydrant) meter for a $950 deposit plus a $65 administration fee, usable for up to six months.

Water Field Operations (627 N. Marietta Parkway, 770-794-5230) handles installation; Customer Service (675 N. Marietta Parkway, 770-794-5150) handles accounts, deposits and billing.

What could change in Marietta

The tap-fee schedule at mariettaga.gov is dated “Effective January 1, 2022,” and this page could not find a newer published version as of September 2026. That does not necessarily mean the prices are stale — some Georgia utilities keep the same schedule for years — but it does mean you should get a written quote rather than budget from this page alone. Because the schedule does not explain the gap between the “Drop” and “With Tap” prices, ask Power & Water in writing which one applies to your parcel before you sign a contract.

How Marietta compares

Using the figures on our other Georgia pages: Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management charges about $2,295 for a city-installed 3/4-inch meter, with no separate water or sewer impact fee. Savannah’s 2026 Revenue Ordinance charges about $2,155 inside city limits. Marietta’s $7,525 (or $6,525 with the subdivision meter price) is well above both, almost entirely because of its $6,000 combined sewer charge — Atlanta’s sewer-side charges total $1,080 and Savannah’s sewer tap-in fee is $400. Marietta has no water or sewer fee structured as a classic capacity/impact fee tied to home size; its Sewer Development Fee is the closest equivalent, and it is flat regardless of house size.

Marietta connection fee questions

How much are water and sewer tap fees for a new house in Marietta, GA?

With a 3/4-inch meter tapped by the city, the published charges total about $7,525: $1,500 for the water meter/tap, $3,500 Sewer Development Fee, $2,500 sewer tap installation and a $25 account charge. If your lot is in a subdivision with the service line already stubbed, the water charge drops to $500 and the total is $6,525. A $275 refundable deposit is separate.

Does Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority charge tap fees to homeowners?

No. CCMWA describes itself as the second-largest wholesale water provider in Georgia; it treats and sells water to other utilities, including City of Marietta Power & Water and Cobb County Water System, and states it is a separate entity from both. It does not bill or serve retail residential customers, so it has no tap fee for a new home.

Does Georgia Power provide electric service in Marietta?

Not inside city limits. Marietta has its own municipal electric utility, Marietta Power & Water, which is the same department that bills water and sewer tap fees. The city’s fee schedule does not publish a separate electric connection or tap charge; new accounts pay the same $25 service charge and a security deposit.

What is the difference between Marietta’s “Drop” and “With Tap” meter prices?

The city’s fee table lists a lower price for meters “In New Subdivisions” (for example $500 for a 3/4-inch meter) and a higher price “With Tap” ($1,500 for the same size). The page does not explain the distinction, but it is consistent with the subdivision price applying where a developer already ran the service line and the city just installs the meter, while the tap price applies where the city must also tap the main. Confirm which applies to your lot with Power & Water.

Is the Marietta fee schedule current?

The published schedule is dated effective January 1, 2022, and no newer version was found as of September 2026. Treat the numbers as needing confirmation and get a written quote from Power & Water (770-794-5150) before budgeting.

What deposit does Marietta require for new service?

$275 for a typical home taking both power and water, $200 for power only, or $75 for water only. The deposit can be avoided or reduced with 12 months of good-standing Marietta Power history or a favorable credit check, and it earns interest annually while held.
